Canada’s Carney Sees Window for Peace in Ukraine
"We are seeing the opportunity to have a just and sustainable peace," Carney told reporters during a briefing at the Canadian Embassy in France. "The goal is to finalize security guarantees."
The Canadian leader additionally endorsed an agreement designed to shield Ukraine from potential future Russian aggression should peace negotiations in Paris succeed.
Earlier this week, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Chrystia Freeland, Canada's former deputy prime minister and foreign minister, to serve as an economic advisor.
The Paris discussions also addressed broader geopolitical tensions, including Washington's stated objective of acquiring Greenland for security purposes and its military intervention in Venezuela aimed at apprehending President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
Carney held talks with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday, with an official statement noting he "emphasized Canada's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland."
The Canadian premier also conferred with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Per an official readout, Carney "reaffirmed Canada's commitment to strengthening the (NATO) alliance and contributing to its capabilities."
The release made no reference to Greenland or Denmark.
Yet during his press briefing, Carney characterized Greenland's status as "a decision for Greenland and Denmark exclusively."
