Canada’s FM says G7 has concluded Venezuela talks

(MENAFN) Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced Tuesday that top diplomats from the Group of Seven had wrapped up talks centered on Venezuela.

"We heard from (US) Secretary (of State Marco) Rubio on the importance of freeing political prisoners, putting in place conditions for a functioning democracy, and planning for elections with a legitimate president chosen by the Venezuelan people in the future," Anand said in a statement.

She noted that the ministers agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue aimed at reinforcing international law and tackling other global crises. The agenda also included discussions on security guarantees to safeguard Ukraine’s independence.

Meanwhile, U.S. military forces carried out extensive airstrikes on northern Venezuela over the weekend, targeting defense systems and communications networks. Special operations units also stormed Caracas, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

At their initial court appearance, both Maduro and Flores entered not guilty pleas to charges related to drugs and weapons.

According to reports, the Trump administration has justified the operation as part of a renewed application of the Monroe Doctrine, portraying it as a campaign against corruption and narcotics trafficking. Officials also linked the move to securing U.S. strategic influence over Venezuela’s significant oil reserves.

Anand emphasized that while Canada has long opposed Maduro’s leadership, its current priority is "supporting the democratic will of the Venezuelan people as well as regional and hemispheric stability."
