India, Canada Seek Closer Ties Through Diplomatic Talks
Jaishankar welcomed Anand’s visit in a post on X, saying he was “delighted” to meet her as both countries work to strengthen their relationship.
“We are advancing our Strategic Partnership,” he said.
The discussions covered developments in trade, investment, education, energy and defense, alongside people-to-people exchanges and major regional and international issues, according to Jaishankar.
Anand also highlighted the potential benefits of closer relations between the two countries, saying “closer engagement between Canada and India offers an opportunity to shape our future prosperity and contribute to a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
The meeting followed a telephone conversation on Tuesday between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which they discussed bilateral relations, energy and technology.
Trade ties are also receiving renewed attention, with Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu leading what officials described as Canada’s largest trade delegation to India in more than three decades.
India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said he held "a productive discussion" with Sidhu on Tuesday, as both sides explore ways to strengthen commercial cooperation.
India and Canada are seeking to restore relations following a diplomatic dispute. As part of those efforts, the two countries agreed this year to double bilateral trade in goods and services to $50 billion by 2030.
